The City of Bristol is extremely grateful to Virginia lawmakers, especially budget conferees and our local representatives Sen. Todd Pillion and Del. Israel O’Quinn, for including $26.5 million in the state budget compromise announced this week for remediation efforts at the Quarry Landfill. This critical funding will ensure our remediation efforts can be completed while minimizing the long-term financial impact on City residents by greatly reducing the need to borrow additional funds to efficiently and effectively resolve the environmental and odor issues at the landfill. City leaders have worked diligently to advocate for this funding, and we sincerely appreciate the patience and support of our residents as we continue to work each and every day to ensure the landfill remediation efforts remain on schedule.
At the Quarry Landfill this week, ongoing maintenance and fine-tuning of the benzene treatment system continued. At the older, adjacent landfill, installation of the air, force main, and gas collection piping system was completed as part of the closure process.
