Landfill Update for February 21, 2025.

Posted on February 21, 2025 at 2:19 PM by Rick Belcher

Snowfall this week has slowed maintenance activities at the landfill while rainwater that accumulated from previous storms is taking time to be pumped out and sent to the Bristol wastewater treatment plant.

Below freezing temperatures also led to a lower flow in the flare this week. Crews discovered the sump line became frozen. After being cleared, the flow in the flare returned to normal.

On the administrative front this week, the City has issued a bid request for a new permanent flare and emergency generator at the landfill. The goal is to review bids, award a contract, and complete the installation by the end of 2025. The project is part of the landfill’s overall plan to operate more efficiently as it moves toward capping and closure. The new permanent flare doubles the capacity of the previous flare, and matches the capacity of the current temporary flare, at the landfill. The new permanent flare will require a new air permit. That permit application is in the process of being submitted. If approved, the City will keep the existing permanent flare as a backup should the new flare need maintenance or breakdown in the future. Redundancy is important for gas removal.
